Concept of Ummah:
"Ummah" is a common Arabic word meaning "people group", or "nation." The term takes on a religious connotations in the Qur'an where Allah is said to have sent to each ummah its own messenger. The Glorious Qur’an is the first constituent that sets the concept of the nation in its new meaning; its broad and balanced concept that hinges on the unity of creed. It was the first to reach out for the whole existence with its universal and humane call that sets aside any tribalism or fanaticism. It addressed humanity at large without any regard for time or place. Muslims, from the Islamic perspective, are a one nation that includes multiple peoples, multiple races, languages and homelands. Allah says, “…and made you into peoples and tribes, so that you might come to know each other. The noblest of you in Allah’s sight is the one who fears Allah most. Allah is all knowing and all-aware.” (Al Quran, 49:13).
Being made of multiple peoples does not constitute a problem for the Muslim nation so long as Islam guides this nation and governs its actions. Islam melts the differences between the peoples with its doctrines, values, rulings and ethics. It melts everyone into one single mold till their differences become an enriching diversity rather than an antagonism. Everybody is loyal to Allah and the Muslim community! Everybody is proud of the faith that Allah honored them with and chose them for, “…Today I have completed your religion for you and completed My blessing upon you…” (Al Quran, 5:3).
Construction of Muslim Ummah:
The Qur’an connects all the Muslim with an indestructible tie; the tie of brotherhood in faith. Allah says, “Surely all believers are brothers...” (Al Quran, 49:10). There is no meaning for brotherhood if the brother does not feel the pains and worries of his brother. The Prophet (SAWS) personified this in the narration made by Al-Nooman Ibn-Bashir who said, “The Prophet (SAWS) said, “The believers, in their mutual love, mercy and compassion, are like one body: if one organ complained, the rest of the body develops a fever. This kind of compassion gives way to cooperation as illustrated by the Prophet (SAWS) in, “The believer to the believer is like the bricks of a wall, enforcing each other.” And then he clasped his hands, by interlacing his fingers. In another narration he says, “The Muslim is the brother of a Muslim. He does not do him injustice nor does he abandon him.“
After that comes the practical application of this brotherhood at the hands of the Prophet (SAWS) in the incident of brotherhood between the immigrants and supporters. Ibn Ishaq says, “The Prophet (SAWS) made pacts of brotherhood between his friends the muhajirin (the immigrants who fled Makkah) and the ansar (the supports who lived in Madinah). They became brothers two by two. Then he took the hand of Ali Ibn Abu-Talib and said, ‘This is my brother!’ This was how the Prophet -the master of all messengers, the leader of all those who fear Allah, the messenger of the Lord of the worlds who has no match or like in all humanity- became the brother of Ali (RA). There were also Hamza Ibn Abdul-Mutalib (the lion of Allah and His Prophet) and Zaid Ibn-Haritha (the Prophet’s freed slave) who became brothers.
Importance of Unity
Success of any nation is concealed in the mutual unity and harmony between its members. A strongly united nation becomes an invincible force and overcomes every hindrance which comes in their way. No one dares to confront such a tide and strong nation. The Holy Quran educated us this covert at the time of its revelation that:"You; by this (strength and unity) distressed the enemies of Allah and yours." In many other verses of the Holy Quran, Muslims have been commanded to be united. i.e.: "And keep hold on to the rope of Allah altogether and do not be divided into sects." In this verse the whole Ummah is addressed instead of an individual and of course it is the responsibility of every Muslim to do so. The Holy Quran emphasize on the harmony and unanimity by using the word "JAMI'EA"(Altogether)"as well. This verse definitely advise connection to "Habl Allah"- (rope of Allah), unity amongst the Muslims and prohibit the partition. Quranic interpreters called it (rope of Allah-("Habl Allah") - the Quran and Sunnah of the Prophet. No doubt this is the basis for the unity and harmony of the Muslims.
MUSLIM UMMAH: YESTERDAY, TODAY, AND TOMORROW
“For five centuries—from 700 to 1200—the Muslim world led the Christian world in terms of geopolitical power, standard of living, religious toleration, sophistication of laws, and level of learning in philosophy, science and culture. Decades of warfare turned the tables. The western powers, the ones who drove us out of Europe, were compelled to invite us in a way. After the Second World War they needed labor, Muslims arrived from India, Pakistan, Africa and Turkey with others .Muslims arrived from sixty five different countries to USA. They were highly educated and professional people.
In spite of the Muslim world having a combined seven-million-strong army the Palestinians are being murdered by the radical Jewish state of Israel with impunity. The international community fully understands that the Muslim Ummah is not to be calculated. The Jewish state has targeted schools, hospitals, homes, UN-run schools and ambulances carrying the wounded and dead.
In the last 15 years, and some more, with the exception of Bosnia, there have been only two nations that have earned their independence as nation-states — East Timor carved out of Indonesia and South Sudan, when Sudan was separated into its northern and southern identities after the bloodbath at Darfur. Both are predominantly Christian populations and both had fought relatively young struggles for their independent identities. Indonesia and Sudan are recognized nation-states — Indonesia far stronger, Sudan emaciated with decades of civil war — and carving pieces of them was no mean achievement.
In the Muslim world, there are similarly two chunks of populations that have eternally been engaged in seeking their right to freedom: freedom to choose and freedom to decide their future — Kashmir and Palestine; and both are hopelessly forlorn and isolated even as they struggle to seek their own destiny.
US President Donald Trump’s Dec. 7 announcement, that the United States would recognize Jerusalem as Israel’s capital and move its embassy here, broke a 70-year diplomatic precedent, leave a challenge towards whole Ummah and provoked worldwide outrage.
We know our strength but we do not capitalize it. In a nutshell as of today as compared to what we were yesterday, we are numerically 1/5th of world population. Educationally and economically we are better off than yesterday. We are most strategically located in the world. World’s 70% energy sources are in our lands. We have a substantial industrial base as we had nothing before. Militarily we have 4.5 million armed persons. Politically we will be undergoing a process of second liberation. Our greatest weakness is our divisions. In spite of all our drawbacks, our greatest strength is our family life, which is intact from Morocco to Malaysia. Definition of a family has not changed in the Muslims.
It is time for a serious course correction within if we wish the voice of the Muslim world to be heard and be of consequence to those who depend on its support in the existing global hierarchy. There is no alternative except independent of Palestine. Israel has no chance to win this conflict. Every particles of Palestine is mixed with clot. Following the stair of blood, it has been born PLO, Hamas … We know them freedom fighter, not terrorists. We are confirmed; this oppression and aggression will be concluded. Palestinian is prolonging the caravan of the Shahid. They did not compromise. The flow of blood, bone even ragged body has been started to talk. The nation which seeks glory in martyr hood, they cannot be stopped. They can be killed and captured, but cannot be displaced from the sky-touched dream of freedom. So this is the responsibility for the whole world to support independent Palestine without any condition.
This struggle will continue, it will never have an end unless the Palestinians achieve their right, achieve their objectives by their independency, to live in a free Palestinian state with Bait ul Maqdas as its Capital. The proposal of two state principles is no more valid. Independent Palestine is the only solution.
Suggestions for Achievement of Muslim Unity:
Muslim Nation has undergone a tremendous change in the past seventy years because of the Mercy of Allah (swt). In spite of some setbacks, this change is definitely a positive change. The future will be brighter than ever. The coming 25 to 30 years will be the most challenging and most exciting for Islam and Muslims. It looks as if Allah (swt) is setting a stage for Islam. It is up to us to seize the moment and play our part individually and collectively. We proposed some suggestions
1. Commitment to Towheed: It is common space to be united.
2. To Avoid Takfir: "Takfir* and Takfiri trend has nothing to do with Islamic teachings and practices.
3. Understanding that Unity is not an option:
4. Identification of Common Enemy
5. To Learn tolerance to others point of view
6. Focus on Common Issues
7. To reach out across ethnic boundaries
8. Adherence to Islamic Brother Hood. Not to declare anyone as Kafir.
9. Responsibilities of Muslim Governments:
A -Media Watch
B-Monitoring of Intelligence
C -Motivating of Pulpit and Arcade/Meember O Mehrab:
D-Control over Extremism
E-Special Focus on Education Sector and Educational Syllabi
If the Unity of Ummah is to be achieved, it can be achieved only when we recognize the larger aim of Islam, which is meant for true peace of the whole mankind. We have to find the way out from the contradiction of so many firqa. The need of the time is to apply Islamic principles in all the fields including law, health, economics, business and sociology.
Unity of being is as true for the relationship of believer to believer, as it is for the individual soul to Allah:
I speak of plural souls in name alone –
One soul becomes one hundred in their frames;
Just as Creator's single sun in heaven
Shines on earth and lights a hundred walls
But all these beams of light return to one
If you remove the walls that block the sun
The walls of houses do not stand forever
And believers then will be as but one soul
